
The session started with some warm-up questions: “Do you celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day?” “What color is associated with this celebration?” and “What do you think this celebration is about?”. Students shared their ideas, which helped us connect their personal thoughts with the topic.
After this, we watched a short video about the history of Saint Patrick and the celebration. The video showed a lot of facts and fun facts about this celebration, so students got involved in some vocabulary and context about this day. This was a great moment for cultural sharing, as learners compared experiences and traditions from their own backgrounds.
After that, we answered some questions according to the facts that the video showed. They answered correctly and used the correct vocabulary, even though we didn’t cover that part yet. They learned a lot about this celebration only with the video.
Then, we covered the vocabulary part, we learned about some words related to the celebration such as leprechaun, luck, shamrock, pot of gold, etc. After that, for practicing, I showed some pictures about the celebration and students had to describe them using the vocabulary previously seen. Then, I showed them a Kahoot game about some questions of this celebration. They spent a really good time competing with each other, and laughed about their answers.
After that introductory and vocabulary part, we started to talk about “luck”, which a very important topic related to this celebration. They discussed some questions in pairs. The questions were “Do you think you are a lucky person?”, “what is the luckiest thing that ever happened to you?”, “do you believe in lucky numbers?”, and “what does good luck mean to you?”. They shared they ideas and spent a great time listening to each one.
Then, I told them one of my luckiest stories and showed some connectors that they can use when telling stories. So, they had to tell me their luckiest story. I gave them some minutes to prepare their story. After that, they started to tell their stories and it was a really interesting activities, because everyone was sharing personal anecdotes.
Finally, I showed them some questions for reflection about the social club and this celebration. We had a great time because we recognized that luck is very important and life is incredible when something very lucky happens to us.
