SOCIAL CLUB: CRIOLOWEEN

Learning English with the Virtual Social Club

The session began with a warm-up question: “What do you celebrate on October 31st?” Students shared their answers, mentioning Halloween and the Day of the Creole Song. This helped us introduce the idea of Criolloween, a fun mix of both celebrations in Peru. Also, they mentioned about their own celebrations with family and friends.

After that, we watched a short video about Halloween. Students learned about its origins, vocabulary, history and other names for Halloween. They really enjoyed playing some videogames after having watched the video.

Next, we talked about how Halloween and Creole traditions can coexist. Students compared customs such as costumes, music, and food, sharing their own experiences and opinions. Besides, they shared with me their own preferences about the topic, most of them preferred Creole music day.

For the practical activity, they worked on a matching game with vocabulary related to both themes’ words like guitar, dance, pumpkin, and celebration. This activity helped reinforce new vocabulary in a playful way. What’s more, we played “guess the object” Halloween themed.

Last but not least, we summed up a brief reflection about cultural diversity and the importance of valuing both local and global traditions. Students expressed that Criolloween was a creative way to celebrate Peruvian culture while having fun.
