Memorial Day (or less commonly called Decoration Day) is a very popular federal holiday in the United States celebrated for remembering and honoring people who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. The holiday, which is currently observed every year on the last Monday of May, was originally called decoration day and was most recently held on May 28, 2018. Memorial Day was previously observed on May 30th from 1868 to 1970.
They also celebrate this day honoring the American flag, which is the main element for decoration during this festive day.
This year for the first time we celebrated this holiday in New Deal, in our last social club we decorated our accommodations to welcome our students to the American-holiday-themed activity that we had prepared for them. To start we welcomed the new students that were joining us for the first time in the academy, making them introduce themselves, so we could be familiar with each other’s names and also it worked as a perfect ice-breaker for them.
During the development of the social club we were able to practice English by learning some facts about the holiday and why it is celebrated, but that was only a warm-up before carrying out the main activity set for the day; after the students got a little extra information about the festivity, we carried out the central activity which was a very funny, educational game called “Chinese Whispers”, during the process of doing this activity, everyone in the room was able to test their sense of hearing, for the main purpose of the game was to make them whisper a set of words and phrases on the ears of their classmates trying to keep the meaning and the sense of the sentence until the end.
The activity turned out to be a great success. All the students were eager to participate and collaborate in the process and each one of them got the chance to tell the phrase they end up hearing in front of the whole group. We all had fan, we enjoyed the activity and most important, we practiced English in a very fun and different way.
At the end we had a little American meal and we discussed about the activities we did.
