The Social Club: Movie Night, focused on helping students identify and understand real-life English expressions commonly used in movies and TV series.
At the beginning of the session, I presented two expressions: “Hello, how are you today?” and “Hey, what’s up?” Students were asked to notice the differences between them. I explained that the first expression is more formal and is commonly found in textbooks and standard English. In contrast, “Hey, what’s up?” is an informal expression that is more commonly used in casual, everyday conversations and can be heard frequently in movies and TV series.
After that, we discussed why movies can be useful for learning English. We highlighted that movies provide visual context, natural rhythm, real pronunciation, and emotional context, which can help students better understand how English is actually used in real life situations.
Next, we reviewed the differences between formal expressions (standard English), idioms, and slang. Students learned how these types of expressions differ and when they may be used in everyday communication.
For the main activity, students watched five short scenes from movies and TV series. While watching each scene, they took notes on expressions they identified and classified them as formal English, idioms, slang, or other informal expressions. This activity allowed students to observe the language in context and understand how the expressions were used by the characters.
During the second part of the Social Club, we continued watching and analyzing scenes from movies and TV series. To finish the session, students created and performed a short dialogue in which they tried to incorporate some of the expressions they had learned throughout the workshop.
Overall, the students participated actively and showed good interest throughout the activities. The Social Club concluded successfully by giving students the opportunity to recognize and practice expressions that are commonly used in real-life conversations.
